What Anxiety?
It's Change Time (with a side of anxiety)
It's hard to believe the school year for many of you is either underway or getting ready to take place. Whether it's your child's first time in school, helping them transition to a new school altogether or like many of my friends, seeing their eldest off to college, there's enough anxiety between you and them, to fill a football field! Here are some strategies that you can use whether you are dealing with anxiety related to the new school year, as a career woman entertaining that job transition or perhaps contending with a major decision that brings up all that anxious energy:
First, stop the What-If Loop de Loop
If you are like me, you've got a running list of What if's. Whatif this, whatif, that...It can be never-ending, but that's exactly my point. END IT. Interrupt the whatif. Just stop it. Yes, its a simple as that. The hard part is recognizing that you are in a Whatif loop so when the feeling of anxiety rises up, ask yourself what's the thought connected to it. Then interrupt it. Remind yourself (out loud) that in this moment, you've got this. Rinse and Repeat. You are on your way to creating a new habit that's much more manageable to then show up as your Best Self.
You Are Not Alone
Thinking "I'm the only one that has this feeling" or "no one else goes through this"...is a waste of time. EVERYONE has anxiety. EVERYONE feels they are the only one. You aren't, so give that ego of yours a time out. And if you are able to share your feeling with someone that you trust, you'll find out that you aren't the only one. And there's comfort believe me, in hearing you aren't alone. That person's circumstance may have different players. That's it.
Get Busy
Fill your time. No this isn't the same as ignoring your feeling. Acknowledge feeling anxious and plan ways to use that energy - that's what it is. Energy. So use it in a way that will better serve you. Plan ahead as you do with taking healthy snacks on a long road trip. If you are dropping off your young adult at college, for example, plan time to connect with a friend who lives in the area or schedule that phone call to talk it through. Yes, I know - easily said than done. Then learn the tools to tackle your anxiety once and for all. It's a mindset thing. Step into 30-minutes of coaching with me, NO-COST, MY GIFT TO YOU, to experience what being coached is like and we can create an action plan on working through the thought keeping you feeling anxious and let's move you forward. On the call we will:
- Help you get started on tackling a challenge you are dealing with;
- Discuss the benefits of entering into a coaching partnership, and
- You will walk away with at least 1 coaching tool and strategy that you can immediately put into action!
Decide ahead of time that you're going to have a great new day and week ahead. And lastly, if no one has yet told you today how beautifully wise you are with just the right amount of "good enough" thrown in, let me have the pleasure to do so now! YOU ARE BEAUTIFULLY WISE AND GOOD ENOUGH. Make it a great day ahead and remember that liking yourself is non-negotiable. Photo by Marcus Woodbridge on Unsplash
